My Stick Figure Family

When I was out running errands today, it once again came to my attention the popularity of the ‘My family’ car stickers.  The idea of them is kind of cute, I guess.  What popped into my head in regards to them were a whole lot of Whys.

Why are they always on the rear window driver side?

Why are they all so bad?  Stick figures can be cute, edgy, creepy, subtle.  It can be amazing what you can do with a ball and a couple of well executed lines.  I have yet to see any of the ‘My Family’ stickers be anything but awful.

Why are the figures identified by their hobbies, sports or activities, job?  I am more than what I do daily and I know I do not identify myself with a purse, high heels, or a dress.  I understand it is the gender symbolism of our culture, but it is not a symbolism I associate with me.

Why do we feel the need to advertise the size and activities of our families? Pride? Gloating? Exhibitionism?  Is this kind of like the dreaded vacation slides?

My husband, on a recent getaway, bought a ‘My Stig Figure Family’ set.  Actually, he bought two to accommodate the size of our family.  For the people that watch ‘Top Gear’, it is kind of funny (although the ‘lady’ Stig is carrying a hand bag).  I am going to encourage an alternate placement to the standard.  Maybe along the side, like airplanes during the war…maybe I can get little ‘X’ stickers in red…
